Frequently Asked Questions:
If you are at this website that you are not one of those
Namby-Pamby parents who thinks their job is to be their
kid's "Best Friend" but rather you know that your job is to
guide your children to make good decisions and to help them
avoid people who will lead them astray. We offer the
following advice and some sample conversations which we hope
will help you and your children:
What good does drug testing do for my
kids?
- It gives your kids an excuse that almost any of
their so-called "friends" pushing them to use drugs will
accept.
- Drug Pusher: "Go Ahead and try it. I promise that
you will like it."
- Your kid: "No thanks, man."
- Drug Pusher: "What... are you some kinda
coward."
- Your kid: "Nope, but my parents drug test
me."
- It gives the drug pushers an incentive to leave
your kid alone.
- Drug Pusher: "Those tests won't catch this."
- Your kid: "Yeah, like I am going to take that
chance! That hair test catches everything and it lasts
practically forever. Dude, if I pop positive my Old
Man is going to beat me until I tell him where I got
these drugs and then he is going to beat you until you
are dead. Still think I ought to try that stuff?"
- Drug Pusher: "Nope!"
- It gives your kids an advantage when they apply
for a job. They can simply add their drug test
results to the job application and instantly have an
advantage over all the other teenagers applying for that
position.
- It gives your kids a taste of the real world.
Most adults undergo drug testing for employment...
your teenagers need to know that the days are ending when
people just trust them.
- It shows your kids that you love them.
Teenagers want guidance and while they will push the
limits they also want to know that their parents are
willing to set limits in order to protect them. Teens
have no respect for indulgent parents or adults who
pretend to be their friends.
When should I start drug testing my
children?
In general it is up to you to decide that based on your
knowledge of your children but we recommend that you start
them when they turn 12 or 13 at the latest. That age is the
start of when kids begin to see themselves as adult-like (if
not actual adults) so having them start drug testing is way
for you to acknowledge their maturity. It is also the age
when they are no longer in elementary school and have more
access to drugs. Obviously if they are already past that age
you should start drug testing them immediately. Some other
things to consider include:
- A Personal Drug Test is a definite advantage
for a military "brat" or any kid whose family is new to a
town and may be trying to fit into a new school or
environment. If that is the case you may want to start
the drug testing earlier than their teen years.
- Be Consistent! Often times the eldest child is
more of a rule-follower and won't go near drugs but his
or her younger siblings may have a more risk-taking
personality. We recommend that you start the oldest child
at 12 or 13 so that it won't seem like you are singling
out the younger sibling for "special treatment." It
avoids arguments if drug testing is seen as the family
norm.
- A good time to start is right after school
vacations end (i.e. Summer Vacation, or Christmas
Break, or Spring Break). Experience has taught the
military to test people when they return from vacation
and so should you... this way if someone offers your teen
any drugs during the vacation break your kid will know
that they have a test coming up shortly.

Won't my kids resist taking the
drug test?
Maybe... but so what!
- Just tell them that you are testing them for the
same reason that your boss tests you... to verify
that drugs are not a problem.
- You can even go over the conversation you want
them to have with anyone who tries to get them to use
drugs. No need to be shy about it... let your children
know that you are willing to be seen as the "Bad Guy" by
their so-called "friends" who want them to try
drugs.
- This is also a good time to tell them that there
will be positive things that come from testing Drug
Free... such as dinner at their favorite restaurant for
them and their friends, a family trip to Disneyworld for
a year of clean drug tests, etc.
- You can also offer to take the test yourself
as a sign that all adults in the family are expected to
live drug-free lives.
Is the hair test how the
military tests for drug use?
No, the military services (and most employers) use a
Urinalysis screening process. However that is only good for
30 days for marijuana and even less for others... which is
why the military constantly tests its service members. We
recommend the Hair Drug Test because it covers a longer
period of time (90 days) for more drugs which makes it less
expensive for a full year's coverage for your family. Unlike
with Urinalysis Testing, there are no known ways to fool a
Hair Drug Test. Also, because teenagers value their privacy,
you can expect a lot more resistance from your teenagers if
you have to watch them pee into a cup.
